As the first point of contact for most visitors - online and offline - the Office of Communications and Public Affairs tells the Berkeley story to inspire audiences and elevate the image of the university. We partner closely with various campus audiences - from the chancellor, deans and faculty members, to staff, students and alumni - as well as external media organizations who can amplify Berkeley's important contributions across a wide range of subjects.
This Social Media Manager is part of a team responsible for the design and implementation of social media-focused content, communications and campaigns for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, which tells the Berkeley story to inspire audiences and advance the reputation of the university.
Working with the Director of Social Media, the Social Media Manager helps create the overall strategy and develop content for social media channels and other digital platforms. They help produce and execute social media campaigns under the guidance of the director and monitor and analyze activity on office social channels and respond when appropriate, utilizing social media-specific writing best practices. They assist with providing a strategic and integrated approach to effectively promote, market, execute and evaluate social media and communication programs for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs.
The role requires an understanding of higher education social media audiences and social storytelling, experience in developing social media campaigns grounded in metrics and a strong ability to navigate and communicate complex issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, ability and other intersectional topics.

Working with the team, create and distribute dynamic, creative and on-brand social media content of all kinds - textual, photographic, graphical and video - to enhance Berkeley's social media presence and campaigns to build community and increase engagement.
Assist in brainstorming, research, interviews, multimedia production (videos/animation/photos/graphics) and writing for social media channels in alignment with the social media strategic plan and the university's brand and mission.
Thoughtfully and appropriately represent campus priorities of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and justice on social media channels.
Manage the student social media team under the guidance of the Director of Social Media, assigning tasks such as content creation or metric reporting and reviewing content.
Maintain content calendar.
Community management and monitoring
Use native and third-party social media monitoring tools like Sprout Social to evaluate the performance of social media content, spot trends and compare our strategy to peer institutions. Adjust tactics or approaches as needed to achieve objectives.
Engage and develop a social media community, including influencers, peer institutions and other UC Berkeley and UC system accounts, following brand guidelines and the social media strategy.
Collaborate with colleagues in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs to identify specific social media opportunities and work with team - designers, writers, strategic communicators, spokespeople, photographers, and web developers - as needed to complete tasks.
Develop successful relationships with communications colleagues, faculty, students, staff, administrators, and alumni to build social media audiences and develop social media content.
Monitoring and crisis communications
Working with the Director of Social Media, assist with critical communications on social media channels, as needed, while maintaining strict confidentiality.
Monitor social channels and anticipate potential areas of interest or concern, raising the issue and recommending strategies to the Director of Social Media or other office leaders.
Provide adequate and timely response during critical incidents.
Professional work experience in marketing, media or communications performing social media and other multimedia content creation.
Working knowledge of concepts and principles of social media, digital storytelling, branding and marketing.
Demonstrated working knowledge of various social media platforms.
Experience contributing or managing social media accounts on behalf of an organization or business.
Ability to navigate and communicate around complex issues related to race, ethnicity, disability and other diverse issues.
Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills, including demonstrated aptitude with communicating with digital/social audiences.
Demonstrated working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Creative Cloud Express and Premiere, among others.
Basic experience and knowledge of photography/videography, animation and motion graphics.
Good organizational, analytical, critical thinking and time management skills, ability to multi-task and adapt to office needs.
Strong attention to detail.
Skill to maintain confidentiality.
Bachelor's degree in related area, or equivalent experience/training.
2-3 years of professional experience.
Knowledge of the higher education environment, including issues, audiences and unique challenges.
Knowledge of other animation tools such as After Effects, Animate or Procreate is a plus.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the hiring range of $69,200.00 - $93,000.00.
