Manhattan Country School, a progressive pre K-8th grade coed school located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, seeks a full-time Director of Communications.
Currently in an exciting time of growth amid a capital campaign to double school enrollment and fund expansion and renovations at both the city and farm campuses, the Director of Communications will play a key role in furthering the strategic goals of the school’s long-term vision. In addition to skills in photography, videography, graphic design, and social media management, they should possess the ability to clearly and compellingly articulate the ways in which MCS’s pedagogy is academically rigorous through its use of social and environmental justice curriculum, models of activism and experiential learning.
Reporting to the Director of the school, the Director of Communications Responsibilities Include:
Summary of the Position
Plan and execute strategic communications for all constituents (current and prospective families, alumni, donors, faculty/staff and general public)
Work with the Head of School on all community messages, crisis communications, and branding
Cultivate a dynamic communications calendar that works in conjunction with planned fundraising and community events, including arranging for media coverage where appropriate
Create original content for digital and print media that is proofread, edited and fact-checked, including email/news announcements, social media posts, and short and long form articles for the website
Attend and document (photos and video) school and community events with an eye toward utilizing these opportunities to demonstrate MCS’s commitment to superior quality progressive education
Compile a bi-weekly newsletter, Nuestra Semana en MCS, showcasing curricular activity at the city and farm campuses.
Author and design annual publications related to community events
Work with the Admissions and Finance Departments to ensure consistency in messaging and marketing strategies for student recruitment and retention, fundraising, events and special programs
Work with the Advancement Department on all event marketing and materials related to the MCS Fund and Capital Campaign
Work with the Operations Team on the annual school calendar
Manage the school’s website and social media platforms (gathering and updating content, curating and archiving photos and videos, drafting text for posts, tracking analytics, etc.)
Serve as lead contact for MCS website and SMS, Blackbaud
Work with outside vendors to coordinate print, design, photography, etc.
Commitment to the MCS mission and core values
Minimum of six (6) years professional experience in communications and marketing, journalism or a related field (experience at a school or nonprofit preferred)
Excellent written and oral communications skills, including knowledge of AP style
Strong research skills and the ability to draw upon multiple sources to craft a comprehensive narrative
Knowledge of and facility with website content management systems, SEO and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn)
Familiarity with progressive educational pedagogy (prior writing on the subject preferred)
Demonstrated ability to track and manage multiple projects on differing timelines
Experience working collaboratively in an inclusive community
Sensitivity to socio-economic diversity
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
Strategic planning and communications experience preferred
Graphic design skills (proficiency in Photoshop and InDesign) preferred
