Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) serves as the official voice of San Diego State University and shares the President's vision, values and priorities while articulating a unified message about the university's unique story. Core service areas include crisis and issues management, marketing, news and media relations, social media, web and interactive communications, executive communications and visual communications, and government and community relations. We work together and with our partners across the institution and auxiliaries to promote the transformational diversity and impact of SDSU programs and achievements. StratComm develops and oversees content for SDSU's main web pages and also for SDSU NewsCenter, flagship social media channels, video productions, photography and the SDSU Magazine.
Government and Community Relations is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with constituent groups. The area also has responsibility for advising SDSU faculty and administrators on projects, initiatives and strategies designed to support collaborative engagement and dialogue with agencies and community members.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Government and Community Relations, the Community Relations Manager (CRM) manages SDSU neighbor and community relations. The CRM will partner with identified agencies, community groups and constituencies to advance the mission of the university and the livability of the neighborhood.
The CRM also creates and manages outreach strategies at the local and regional level; implements engagement programs, partnership initiatives, special events, and community meetings that reflect university priorities in order to inform and increase support among legislators, community leaders and external stakeholders. The CRM will work collaboratively with others within StratComm, The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, The Division of Business and Financial Affairs, Associated Students and others at SDSU to secure support for key initiatives and strategic priorities from neighbor and community leaders. The CRM will serve as a liaison to the community, representing SDSU at community meetings and functions.
In accordance with Assembly Bill 963 (2020), the CRM will serve as the primary employee managing the university's civic engagement committee and voter engagement activities. The CRM will lead the university's voter engagement committee and work with systemwide plans for all major elections as the civic and voter empowerment coordinator for the campus.
The ideal candidate will be a consensus builder that has experience building relationships with constituents from varied backgrounds. They will be comfortable speaking in front of large groups and addressing issues raised in meetings. Experience working for local, state and federal legislative offices is desired. A candidate who is flexible and adaptable will thrive.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.
Bachelor's degree in relevant field
Minimum of two years of professional experience in community relations or public affairs
Demonstrated experience creating and implementing complex community relations initiatives
Required to attend meetings/events or perform duties outside of normal work hours (may include weekends)
Must have the ability to travel and attend off-campus appointments and events
Experience in a diverse organizational setting is preferred
Demonstrated experience resolving difficult issues with constituents, clients and/or members of the public.
Experience working within a large public organization

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.
The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
