SUMMARY Spring Arbor University (SAU) and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics seek to hire a Director of Sports Information and Media Relations. The SID will serve as the primary institutional media and public relations contact for the athletic department that serves 20 intercollegiate sports programs. Major duties include the collection, analysis, and dissemination of sports-related data; the preparation and management of written material for publication online and to media outlets; and recruiting and supporting student workers and volunteers to assist in the tasks of this role and game day operation (scorer’s table and press box for related intercollegiate contests). Candidates should exhibit the fruits of a vibrant Christian faith and exemplary character as well as embrace and support our Christian mission within the Free Methodist tradition. Exempt; full-time, 12-months
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned by proper personnel):
Develop sports news media relations in support of Spring Arbor’s mission statement, goals, and philosophies
Serve as a member of the athletic department executive staff
Hire, organize, and/or supervise work study personnel for sports statistics gathering and reporting
Collaborate with Marketing and Communication to design, implement, and coordinate marketing and promotion efforts
Provide continual evaluation of processes and procedures; responsible for suggesting methods to improve area operations, efficiency, and service to both internal and external customers
Work in collaboration and cooperation with coaches, other departments, and academic divisions on campus, using timely and appropriate judgment in upward communication regarding department concerns and responsibilities
Serve as liaison for the athletic department between the University, NAIA, NACDA, Crossroads League, and the media for sports-related material
Serve as the primary point of contact for athletic opponents (e.g. providing rosters, statistics, media lists, etc.)
Assist with game day management
Schedule and coordinate the athletic department Speaker’s Bureau for all athletic department personnel with the campus community, local community, and the SAU alumni
All other duties typically associated with a Director of Sports Information and Media Relations position as well as duties as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
Coordinate the research, collection, compilation, archiving, reporting, and dispersal of sports statistics and records for all SAU sports in compliance with Spring Arbor University, Crossroads League, and NAIA policies and procedures
Update stats program following each intercollegiate athletic contest
Prepare and distribute sport news releases and/or feature stories for various local, regional, and/or national outlets
Ensure accuracy of information concerning the University and its athletic program on the NAIA, NACDA and Crossroads League websites
Respond appropriately to sports information requests via e-mail, fax, postal mail, phone, in-person, etc.
Oversee student staff in the production and distribution of hometown news releases
Monitor and ensure Sports Information Office is in compliance with the Crossroads League conference and the NAIA
Media Management and Relations
Prepare publications, website, and social media material to support SAU’s 20 NAIA intercollegiate sports programs
Maintain media contact lists and both promote and monitor area news coverage of SAU athletics
Manage the photography and video needs at all sporting events, community service activities, and other official athletic functions, maintaining photo and video archives for public and website usage
Update SAU athletic website regularly
Schedule photography and video for all athletic contests
Ensure that social media sites are updated and monitored regularly
Promote weekly Crossroads League and NAIA Players of the Week, nominate and vote weekly
Manage our online media partnerships to broadcast and archive all home basketball, volleyball, and soccer games through the Cougar Sports Network
Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to ensure internal and external consistency of the SAU brand by promoting internal and external adherence to the manual and style guide, including enforcing proper use of the college mascot and colors across athletics
REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES Serves as a member of the Athletics Department reporting directly to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics with a strong, collaborative connection to and relationship with the Chief Marketing Officer
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May supervise student workers and volunteers to meet the needs of the department
The successful candidate will have excellent writing skills, strong organizational ability, a detail orientation related to data and figures, and proven ability to maximize external communications and exposure opportunities via website and social media.
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and execute in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment
Excellent people skills with a strong desire and commitment to serve others
A willingness to travel, as needed
A clear understanding of the Spring Arbor University Athletics Department mission and NAIA philosophy

Educational and/or professional experience in communication, journalism, public relations or sports management is also preferred
Experience with Microsoft Office products (i.e. Excel, Outlook, Word), social media management, and basic web development required
