The Magazine, News & Digital Journalism Department (MND) seeks a tenure-track faculty member to teach longform narrative, with an emphasis on multiplatform story-producing, to undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will have professional experience in writing, editing and/or producing longform journalism in audio, video or other digital formats, and be able to lead students in project-based learning from pitch through research/reporting, production and distribution. The role will involve collaboration with other faculty and staff to produce innovative student journalism with professional aspirations. This position has a start date of August 21, 2023.

The Magazine, News & Digital Journalism Department has a strong tradition of excellence and alumni placement at leading media organizations, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Vox/New York Magazine, Conde Nast, Apple News, etc. The faculty prides itself on an innovative curriculum that prepares students to work in today's journalism world and lead the one that comes next. As a department, we value collaboration and community building among students, staff and faculty.
Our 17 full-time faculty members – all of whom come from industry – teach required courses in writing, reporting, data, editing, diversity and ethics, along with a variety of electives in emerging technology, multimedia and social media. The curriculum emphasizes understanding audience and multiplatform content creation.
More than 200 undergraduates and graduate students in the MND program participate in project-based learning that encourages experimentation and creativity. Several recent class or schoolwide journalism projects have gone on to win national honors from the Online News Association, Hearst Journalism Awards and the Society of Professional Journalism. The NewsHouse, a long-running digital news magazine, gives students both a learning environment and a public-facing outlet. Recent projects include topics such as student mental health, the consequences of I-81 on the Syracuse community and the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.
Program alumni maintain strong connections to Newhouse and Syracuse University. Our alumni are editors, reporters, podcast producers and social media editors, and work on audience engagement, design/dev and editorial strategy teams. They are found in numerous leadership positions and often return to campus to share their knowledge.
