The Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility (CGHSR) is seeking a senior-level communications specialist to develop and implement a strategic and creative approach to communications for the Center and its initiatives, and to expand the reach, influence and impact of our work. An ideal candidate would have experience working in global health, public health, international relations, international development, international/humanitarian organizations, or a similar role and/or be familiar with the field, in addition to skills in communications, writing, and storytelling. This position will work with key partners to develop, shape and implement the various methods in which CGHSR connects with communities within and beyond the U, and with all of our stakeholders. The position is 100% remote. The candidate does not need to reside in Minnesota. There is a possibility of international travel. Salary range $60k-$75k depending on qualifications.
Communication and Marketing Duties – 70%
Develop and implement a strategic communications plan to tell the story of CGHSR’s impact to university, community, and partner audiences.
Oversee and perform internal and external communications-related work, which may include print, social media, public relations, web content, multi-media, photo and video access, and some event coordination, ensuring consistent and effective messaging and branding across all platforms.
Develop communication and marketing plans for activities, programs, services, resources, and events that are in line with a greater department communications and/or marketing strategy. Develop and maintain a consistent look and feel of online presence, including website and social media communications.
Research, write, and edit feature stories and messages, and support grant writing or proposal development, to create materials that demonstrate the Center’s impact; translate complex global health topics into clear, concise and compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
Develop and maintain effective methods for distributing communication materials and information; identify promotional or advertising opportunities, analyze existing markets, coordinate and monitor the use of the center’s brand.
Create specialized or technical materials for marketing, publication, and/or public or internal relations that incorporate both written and graphic work, and utilize multiple media methods.
Develop, write, and edit marketing materials for center events and programs, including graphic assets, flyers, invitations, and announcements.
Manage monthly newsletter including to curate content, oversee production, write stories, manage & segment subscriber list.
Engage with other University colleges and departments, the media, or the public on questions, comments, or requests for information. Draft responses to news publications for information related and concerning the University of Minnesota.
Maintain and strategically update the department’s current website. Work with central OACA Communications to create a visually exciting site that fits within the set UMN format.
Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, the media and the general public to protect and promote the reputation and brand of the Center, including active issue management. Create and distribute public communications such as media releases, speeches, newsletters, social media communication, or perform other public relations responsibilities.
Develop and maintain the department’s Twitter and YouTube pages. Analyze web usage to identify trends in new media communication tools and social media.
Does occasional video and photography work.
Public Engagement and Educational Event Duties –20%
In collaboration with CGHSR team, create, implement, analyze, and evaluate the Center’s signature programs and educational outreach events related to global health, health equity, and health systems in both domestic and international settings. Portfolio includes the annual QP Lecture and engagement events featuring visiting scholars as appropriate.
For the projects listed above, develop and manage timeline, work plan, budget, and project deliverables.
Center Administration 10%
Contribute to Center-wide efforts such as planning, reporting, and budgeting.
Manage vendors, contractors, technology specialists, etc as needed.
Draft reports and funding applications as required.
Participate in Leadership Council and other advisory meetings.
Participate in University-wide and ad-hoc workgroups as requested.
Keep current with developments in the field, and continued professional development.
Assist with other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Health, International Relations or related field plus 4 years professional experience.
Two years of experience with Web authoring software such as Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), Premier/Final Cut Pro, Drupal, Mail Chimp, Google Suite, Word, PowerPoint, and social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube).
Ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of individuals/organizations, including faculty, community organizations, global partners, and funding agencies.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including proofreading, spelling, and grammar on telephone, email, and face-to face.
Highly developed interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated interest in working with diverse, multicultural communities and/or in international settings.
At least 3 years experience working in a global health, public health, academic or NGO setting.
Proven ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Successful problem solving and decision making skills.
Excellent organizational skills, to include multi-tasking and time management.
Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds (on occasion).
