With a dual reporting relationship to the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Chief Executive Officer of Stony Brook University Medicine and Stony Brook University's Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) will oversee the development and implementation of innovative, creative, strategic, and measurable communications and marketing programs to support the strategic priorities of Stony Brook Medicine's leadership team and align with Stony Brook University's overarching mission and brand. The CCMO will be a thought partner and strategic counselor to fellow members of SBM's executive team. The CCMO will lead a team of approximately 27 communications and marketing professionals (with room to expand) to position SBM as one of the premier academic health centers regionally, nationally, and globally by building its brand and promoting its services, clinical capabilities, faculty insight, and research accomplishments. The CCMO will be an articulate and knowledgeable representative of SBM to a wide variety of constituencies.
Establish and implement a multi-year strategic communication and marketing plan that supports SBM's strategic goals and drives acquisition and revenue. The plan will include:
A strategic marketing campaign for the health care system designed to differentiate SBM from its competitors, leveraging all platforms, including print, display, broadcast, audio and digital.
A robust, proactive local, national, and international media relations program to raise awareness of SBM and highlight its clinical, research and operational achievements.
An executive and thought leadership program that positions SBM leadership and senior faculty as authorities in health care policy, practice, and specific areas of expertise.
Internal communications for a network of more than 14,000 employees designed to inform, motivate and support SBM's outstanding workforce. This would include partnering with Human Resources to communicate employee engagement programs.
Targeted communications for additional audiences, including patients, students, trustees, volunteers, alumni, donors, and local communities.
A comprehensive review and refresh of SBM's web properties to enable patients to access healthcare services; students to explore educational opportunities and access resources; employees to access relevant news, information and resources; media and others to learn about SBM, its strengths, achievements, mission and values.
Strategies aimed at enhancing reputation and rankings by Doximity, US News & World Report, and other outside organizations.
A clear vision and defined values for the communications and marketing team designed to foster a culture of professionalism, accountability and collaboration.
An understanding of emerging trends in higher education, medicine, healthcare, marketing, and communications to ensure Stony Brook Medicine remains relevant in the industry.
Strong partnerships with all areas of SBM to ensure that messaging is consistent across the enterprise.
Tools to measure the effectiveness of marketing and communications initiatives to ensure that goals are being met.
15+ years of work experience, with a steady increase in responsibility in the areas of communications and marketing.
Demonstrated success in team leadership, management, and organizational design.
Experience with branding, including having been responsible for developing and implementing programs that support the strategic priorities of a large, multi-layered organization.
Comprehensive and thorough understanding of key communications practices within a complex setting. Healthcare experience preferred.
Advanced knowledge of strategies and best practices for communications, including, for example, sophisticated and creative use of social media.
Ability to capitalize on emerging technologies to further business objectives.
Experience developing and overseeing an effective and engaging internal communications program for a large network of employees.
Familiarity with marketing analytics programs.
Demonstrated success working collaboratively and strategically across multiple functions; ensuring alignment among organizations that operate independently of one another.
Knowledge and experience in all aspects of assigned functions, as well as development and management of operational and capital budgets.
Experience developing and executing strategies that position executives as thought leaders.
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships of trust and confidence with senior leaders, peers, journalists, and global thought leaders. Ability to collaborate, influence, and effectively engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
A thorough understanding of leadership's main objectives -- and the ability to translate those into actionable communication and marketing strategies.
Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral.
