The Communications Manager is equal parts public relations guru, creative story-teller and marketing maestro. Your output delights our community of design professionals across the country and keeps them engaged with top-tier content. The position plays a key role in our success by helping to increase exposure and national recognition of our organization and our key programming such as conferences, events, award competitions and much more. You frequently interact with members of our community via online platforms and maintain watchful oversight of how the IDSA brand is represented across our various media channels.
The Communications Manager is creative, detail oriented, well organized, and highly adaptable when operating within a fast-paced team and shifting priorities. This position requires close collaboration across all IDSA’s program departments to develop and roll out comprehensive content packages which combine strong written elements with eye-catching visuals across multiple platforms and media formats (print, digital, online, social).
Reporting to IDSA’s Executive Director, the Communications Manager is also responsible for managing marketing budgets, producing data-driven reports on the effectiveness of campaigns, and offering strategic recommendations that will advance our communications plans year over year.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Work in close partnership with IDSA staff across the entire organization to create integrated communication strategies and roll-out plans that are distributed through a variety of media.
Develop and implement targeted marketing campaigns for all IDSA products, programs and services; segmenting messaging where appropriate to deliver the correct message to a targeted audience.
Create and maintain a comprehensive content / marketing calendar; working with others on staff to align priorities, set expectations and deliver against planned project milestones.
Write news and related articles for IDSA’s website that cover IDSA’s events, membership, elections, education, sponsorships, outreach efforts, programs and services.
Manage and create coordinated content for all of IDSA’s social media platforms, including: LinkedIn, Facebook Instagram and Twitter to promote programs and services and generate awareness to the public, IDSA members, chapters and sections.
Craft attention-grabbing content for monthly email marketing campaigns.
Assist with the curation and creation of INNOVATION, IDSA’s quarterly printed magazine featuring rotating authors and topics relevant to industrial design.
Collaborate with INNOVATION contributors, copy editor and graphic designer.
Conduct ongoing analysis on the effectiveness of media campaigns to inform how we might adapt and improve future programs.
Create and conduct post-event attendee research surveys to assess participant sentiment and collect feedback – using this data to create insights and strategic decisions for future programming.
Understand the demographics of the industrial design community, adapting our messaging and channel strategies to most effectively connect with desired segments of this wide-ranging group.
Work with existing partner organizations in the negotiation of cross promotional swaps; manage agreements to ensure their proper execution
Identify new opportunities for partnerships and corporate collaborations with other organizations who share common audiences, goals, messaging or whose services might benefit the IDSA community
May be asked to travel throughout the year to assist in the production and documentation of conferences / events through coordinated social media activation, live-streaming content, photography and video.
Serve as primary copy editor and go-to resource for staff for matters relating to written communications.
Write and edit professional biographies for staff, members and speakers.
Participate in strategic planning efforts, identifying areas of growth and opportunity for the association.
Participate in annual budgeting and projection processes to set goals for the year.

Experience with association and content management systems is a plus.
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is a plus.
Working understanding of website editors and content creation tools such as Drupal, Wix, or Wordpress is a plus.
Interest in / experience with photography is a plus.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field from accredited university or institution.
5 years in the communications, public relations or related industry where marketing, communication and engagement strategies was a primary job responsibility.
Prior experience with print publication is a plus.
