Position Details: Summary of Duties:
This position serves as the lead science writer for Washington State Magazine. The writer is responsible for identifying stories about research across Washington State University that would be of broad interest to alumni and other magazine readers. This person will translate complex scientific subjects in ways that will appeal to the average reader and build affinity for the work at WSU. Additional duties include periodically writing research news articles for WSU's daily Insider news publication, recording podcasts for the magazine, participating in magazine story planning and design, and assisting with other research and general interest stories at the magazine and throughout University Marketing and Communications.
Remote/Hybrid options will be considered.
70% - Science Writing
Serve as the lead science writer for Washington State Magazine.
Responsible for identifying significant research at WSU, interviewing subjects, researching scientific topics, and writing magazine stories of varying lengths and depth.
Work closely with faculty to translate academic research and elevate the public understanding of the WSU enterprise.
Present research and other accomplishments in a creative way that demonstrates progress toward key university initiatives.
Partner with the magazine editor and art director on visual storytelling to complement the research stories, including infographics and other forms.
15% - Research News Articles
Collaborate with news and media relations to support the chief science writer and others on the team with articles for the daily WSU Insider news website.
10% - Multimedia Production
Identify research topics for podcasts, videos, slideshows, or other storytelling methods.
Record interviews and other narrative for the magazine podcast.
Work with the magazine editor, content leads, video manager and other team members on videos that demonstrate top-level WSU research with strong impact.
5% - Other
Magazine and University-related assignments, as needed.
A Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, marketing or other relevant field AND either two (2) years of professional experience in print OR broadcast news media, public relations, marketing including the use of electronic media or two (2) years of other relevant professional experience.
Five (5) years of professional experience in print or broadcast news media, including proven experience with writing and editing skills.
Five (5) or more years of professional journalism, with proven experience in science or science journalism.
Experience interviewing scientists and translating and writing technical, complex material to general audiences.
Demonstrated ability to identify science-related stories that will have a broad appeal.
A strong commitment to being a part of an interdisciplinary team and creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.
Multimedia production, audio and/or video.
Effective social media for professional purposes.
Web editing, especially in a WordPress environment.

Pullman, WA - Remote/Hybrid options will be considered
Range $4,508.70 - $5,635.88 | Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range. Commensurate upon qualifications and experience.
