The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a Communications Specialist. The Division of Preventive Medicine seeks a Communications Specialist to manage the daily duties for content creation and specific communications projects, such as website content creation and management, executive communications, editorial content, and social media for the Forge AHEAD Center and research projects. The Specialist will work with the Center's Director of Communications to develop content, articles, and promotional materials that are in line with the Center's branding. The vision of Forge AHEAD Center is to achieve health equity by eliminating disparities and improving outcomes in diabetes, obesity, and hypertension throughout the South. This is accomplished through effective partnerships with academic, non-academic, and community organizations to support research, training, outreach, and education. Promotes the vision of the Forge AHEAD Center and research projects as assigned by preparing and editing news releases, feature articles and promotional materials. Provides public relations guidance and topical instruction to internal and external organizations. Design infographics, print material, permanent and temporary signage, presentations, and more. Write new and update existing web content for the Center and research project resources, ensuring accuracy, keyword optimization, and proper spelling/grammar/composition May also include supervising a program or staff member/intern, and/or ensuring the implementation and success of communications projects.
Key Duties, Primary Responsibilities:
* Responsible for written materials and graphics including content creation for websites, articles, infographics, promotional materials and /or newsletters * Generate story ideas and create content * Coordinate video and photography sessions, take videos and photos as well as schedule and conduct interviews * Produce social media posts and news features * Will also participate in determining the most appropriate methods for distribution to maximize exposure * Coordinate a broad range of communication projects and work with key staff/faculty across the Center on production and meeting deadlines * Attend regular meetings, and work directly with the UAB investigators and study manager to develop study-related materials for recruitment and retention * Manage Social Media accounts in order to represent and promote a regional research center to include the performance of administrative functions in support of the Center * Manage communication projects, direct social media strategies, and maintain digital archive files * Gather insights based on data by analyzing key audiences, university peers and the higher education marketplace * Serve as point of contact to direct social media communications to the right individual or team * Represent the Center at formal and informal functions * Respond to media requests for information * Maintain and share knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate publications, and/or attending related seminars, training, and conferences * To assist in executing communications strategies and programs to influence employee engagement, increase employee knowledge and share key departmental/division messages * To develop a variety of employee communications that support all units of the department or division * To draft, edit and deliver employee messaging through available media, including print matter, advertisements, e-publications, web sites, intranet content, social media, database-driven web content, change management communications, presentations, other employee messaging and materials and ongoing internal communications * To make best use of available technologies and ensure integrated internal presentation of UAB brand. To gather and analyze data on communications effectiveness and recommend improvements to extend reach and readership * Perform other duties as assigned

Annual Salary Range - $47,665 - $77,455
* Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field * One (1) year of related experience required * Work experience may not substitute for education requirement
* Will have previous experience managing social media and writing for marketing communication pieces * Adept at using Microsoft Office suite and proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and all its tools * A robust scientific vocabulary and familiarity public health principles would be advantageous
