Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Communications at the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business will serve in conjunction with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communication as the lead expert in developing the communications strategies and campaigns that will elevate the Gabelli School of Business brand, positioning it as a thought leader and innovator across multiple business-related sectors, with an emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance), as well as the School's many areas of expertise. They will work to build critical relationships with faculty and administrator experts, pairing them with reporters covering related beats, and working to ensure that Gabelli gains a share of voice in a news cycle that affords the business school the opportunity to influence and own the space in key specialty areas.
This hands-on position will manage PR initiatives originating from within the department on a daily basis and will also oversee the relationship with the external agency, serving as the bridge between internal knowledge and external media exposure. In addition, the Associate Director will oversee a wide range of communications including the writing of press releases, newsletters, articles, summaries of research projects and white papers, student and faculty profiles.
Along with the senior director of marketing and communications and the assistant director of events and social media, the associate director will ensure successful organizing and implementation of events, harvest internal content and process it for consumption across multiple internal and external platforms—from web articles and blogs to owned and earned social media.
Essential Functions:
Oversees a wide range of communications including the writing of newsletters, articles, summaries of research projects and white papers, as well as the development of student and faculty profiles to be distributed across internal and external communications channels.
Works in conjunction with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and the assistant director of events and social media to schedule, organize, and promote Gabelli School events—from small gatherings, to large-scale conferences and graduation ceremonies. Manages press invites, collection and editing of speaker bios and releases providing permission for use of likeness and any related materials. Oversees press relations at onsite events, providing recaps on panel discussions and content for social media posts.
Along with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and in agreement with key stakeholders, works to develop the tone that permeates across all communications building in themes established by research on what will clearly differentiate the Gabelli School educational brand and explain the value proposition.
Strategically plans and manages public relations initiatives that promote the Gabelli School as a whole, and also focuses on building thought leadership in its specialty areas, utilizing well-established press contacts to create buzz and expand the School's brand recognition in new markets. Position Gabelli School experts as key sources for commentary on emerging issues, relevant topics and breaking news stories. Works with the University Central PR team on strategy to amplify the Gabelli School brand through University channels and beyond.
In conjunction with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications, the dean, the associate deans, and area chairs, segments and prioritizes the promotion of expertise across the disciplines that will be most relevant to internal and external audiences and will ensure increased media coverage.
Develops a comprehensive list of faculty members and administrators who are committed to serving as available experts, building a content library of topics based around their research and interests—one that is available to the press by category.
Provides media training that serves to ground faculty members and administrators in the most effective ways to interact with the press in amplifying their own expertise as well as the Gabelli School brand.
Builds a rapport with members of the press on a local, national, and international level that generates inquiries on a regular basis from reporters who seek commentary on breaking stories, establishing Gabelli School as a thought leader in the industry segments it serves.
Builds reporter lists by category within Meltwater systems (or similar vendor) for deploying press releases by beat. Establishes KPIs for measuring media mentions and placements, and track all activity through Meltwater via widgets within pre-determined dashboards.
Strengthens Gabelli School's ties to NYC businesses and government agencies through the negotiation of partnerships, and sponsorships, participation in external events, and the invitation of external speakers to sit on internal industry panels.
Writes press releases for a broad range of initiatives, activities, and events that provide the breadth and depth of information and the engaging pitch language, which ties the content to mainstream media interests and encourages media coverage.
In conjunction with the Senior Director, manages the external public relations firm, brainstorms on key industry trends and the connections between Gabelli School internal expertise as it relates to building perceived thought leadership and brand recognition. The Associate Director leverages the agency's connections to press and industry leaders to expand the Gabelli School of Business influence in the New York metropolitan area, across the nation, and around the global.
Manages the conversion of press releases into web-based news articles that translate complex ideas into content that is relevant to Gabelli's numerous constituents.
Invites members of the press to cover public facing events through digital, print, and broadcast reporting, manages social media from events integrating commentary directly from the stage, and produces daily press recaps with key content takeaways.
Required Qualifications:
Graduate degree in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism
6+ years of experience in communications with well-established connections in business and industry media related to Gabelli School areas of expertise on a local, national and global scale.
Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills across diverse audiences and platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in college and university communications and event organizing, especially at a university or top-tier business school
