Position Summary:
The Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC) at University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a dynamic center encompassing a diverse array of interdisciplinary investigators that span the schools of Medicine, Biological Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, Arts and Law. Our state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum certified research and clinical building houses 25 of our 65 center faculty members. Center faculty have obtained more than $200 million dollars in grant and foundation funding for their research programs. Our programs include undergraduate and graduate student training programs funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and two National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored T32 graduate student training grants, along with state-of-the-art shared equipment, research services programs and seminar series programs.
The SCRC has an urgent need to fill an existing vacant position to coordinate and manage the center's internal, cross-campus, and external communications. The Communications Coordinator has a central role in planning, design, and operationalization of all communications on behalf of the SCRC. Under the direction of SCRC leadership, this individual will compose, edit, and distribute communications via direct mail, telemarketing, and e-communications; create collateral materials; and play a lead role in all internal and external communications on behalf of the center. S/he will recommend targeted approaches for various specific audiences using multi-modal communications such as newsletters, web-based communications including website updates / redesign, and social media initiatives. A background in biology to enable communication with both a scientific and lay audience is essential.
Two or more years of experience and expertise in developing, establishing and maintaining communications strategies, including ability to review emerging requirements and assess impact on established policies and procedures.
Bachelor's degree in biology or related area, with 2-3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent training and experience.
Proven ability to communicate scientific concepts and technical data to a lay audience via written, oral, digital, and other media Ability to interact professionally with the public, faculty, and staff. Interpersonal and communication skills to establish constructive working relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen. Good organizational skills. Working knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure. Skill to maintain confidentiality. Ability to ensure production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints. General knowledge of the usage and applications of electronic communication tools and skill in using same. Working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Experience and expertise in working with personnel representing a wide range of competence and rank including faculty, deans, directors, chiefs, chairs, managers, staff, and peers throughout California
