The Principal Content Writer is a communications professional with broad-based responsibilities for conceptualizing, writing, and editing content about the University of Saint Joseph that support efforts in the areas of recruitment, public relations, advancement, and advertising. Key to this position is editorial oversight of Outlook magazine, the University's principal publication that is produced twice a year.
Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)
Outlook magazine: Serve as editorial/production manager and principal writer for all aspects of the magazine; responsibilities include planning, writing, proofing, assistance with photo selection, layout and production.
Identify, research, and write news stories based on campus activities and events for publication twice a week for USJ news and social media
Write and edit articles and copy, ensuring accuracy, following the USJ style guide, and proper grammar by AP Style guide standards
Contributing writer for miscellaneous USJ materials, including web, recruitment brochures, ad copy, speeches, content marketing, social media, emails, texts, weekly campus update, and Family Connections Newsletter. Serve as head proofer for the marketing office.
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with multiple internal clients to determine project parameters, present ideas, and coordinate a project from inception to completion
Work with public relations firm on identifying target audiences and brainstorm PR opportunities.
Craft and distribute press releases, media alerts and announcements outside of contracted releases with public relations firm
Determine opportunities to engage various departments to help further the work of the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Position USJ stories and articles to meet the strategic goals of the University.
Job Requirements:
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field
3-5 years professional experience in copywriting, editing, content writing, and production.
Proven project management experience including, but not limited to, the ability to oversee magazine production and adapt articles for various platforms
Excellent writer and copy editor skills with knowledge of AP Style and the ability to adapt to institutional style
Strong writing skills, including journalism, magazine writing, web writing and social media; the ability to adapt content to different platforms and audiences
Other Qualifications
Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
Well-developed organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously under deadline
Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows or Mac environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed. Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
Experience writing for a college or university a plus
Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner
Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public
Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population
