Job Summary
The Director of Communications is an adviser to the dean and senior staff, the academic department chairs, and the executive directors of centers and institutes on issues regarding media communications and outreach. Under direction of the dean, with responsibility to the executive assistant dean, the director of communications is responsible for advising college leadership on, and directing the implementation of, internal and external communications issues, plans, strategies, messages, tools, and talking points to build support for the college. Provides vision, direction, and leadership in overall brand building, communications, and marketing campaigns for the college. Coordinates and implements strategic and mission-critical communications that may have impact on a wide variety of stakeholders. Provides strategic counsel to all departments and unit-based communication staff. Provides guidance on the implementation and dissemination of the college's strategic vision and plan and helps evaluate the status and effectiveness of the implementation of the plan. Develops effective news articles and marketing materials to highlight research success for print, web, and presentation- based distribution.
Leads a team of communications, web and events specialists that promote an integrated approach to media relations, marketing strategies and partner engagement initiatives to enhance the college's reputation and promote research discoveries and achievements. Works with Development and External Relations to develop strategies and materials to engage alumni and corporations with the college. Establish college policies and procedures related to media relations, news releases, publications, websites, social media, outreach materials, and crisis communications in consultation with the dean, college leadership, and the UC Davis Strategic Communications and News and Media Relations office.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN FOR APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BY 3/16/2023. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Sit for extended periods of time working at a computer.
Discern color in order to prepare and review various publications, both print and electronic.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
At times work beyond the standard work schedule to attend meetings and events, may include evenings and weekends. All Dean's Office staff are required to work at Commencement. Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's Degree in communications or related discipline; or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
Demonstrated progression of experience with increasing responsibility with a minimum of 7 years in the communications field (journalism, graphic design, marketing, development communications and/or public relations). Experience using e-communication and social media platforms to enhance communication and deliver messages to target audiences.
Experience delegating work to internal and/or free-lance creative staff.
Demonstrated writing skills, including skills to use written language accurately, concisely and creatively; command of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and skills in editing and proofing copy.
Skills to recognize and assess situations and events with news value and to propose and implement the best strategies for publicity. Organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and meet numerous deadlines.
Knowledge of publishing techniques, including the editorial, graphic design, style, and production aspects of publishing.
Skills to use computers for document creation, multi-media presentations, research and analysis, and communications.
Preferred:
Master's degree in a related field.
Leadership experience analyzing situations, providing creative direction, giving sound professional judgment, and implementing strategies as they relate to a comprehensive long-range college communications, marketing, and external relations program.
Experience managing financial resources and planning and adhering to budgets. Experience with Mac OS.
Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with faculty, staff, outside vendors, alumni, students and donors. Skills generating innovative approaches, originating action without instruction, and establishing goals and priorities in the development of programs and special events.
Ability to translate and present engineering and scientific topics accurately and in ways that appeal to and engage a lay or technical audience.
