Summary Position The Communications Specialist for Inclusive Excellence helps amplify and advance the university's efforts and initiatives related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) by planning, coordinating, conceiving and implementing an overall communications strategy and producing a variety of print and digital communications for both internal and external audiences. This position enhances engagement with audiences through a variety of communications channels and events. This role provides valuable review of print and digital communications with a particular focus on how those communications are presenting DE&I efforts at the university.
Support for strategic communications
Participates in the planning and creation of communications planning and content for University Communications.
Reviews digital and print communications with a special focus on issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Works closely with the strategic communications team to manage and create social media assets.
Assures that brand standards and accessibility requirements are met across platforms.
Identifies and writes stories for print and online distribution highlighting Elon's initiatives related to DE&I and celebrating the success stories of individuals related to these efforts.
Supports DE&I media relations by helping with the creation of news releases, responding to media inquiries and assisting in preparation for news conferences.
Supports public relations by aiding in the planning and execution of persuasive campaigns using earned/paid media and other channels and assisting with communications during crisis management.
Works closely with the Inclusive Excellence and University Communications teams to find internal and external opportunities to amplify faculty research/student involvement in the DE&I space.
Support for Division of Inclusive Excellence communications
Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Communications and in close collaboration with the Vice President and Associate Provost for Inclusive Excellence, develops and implements a comprehensive communications strategy and plan, including web content, for the Division of Inclusive Excellence.
Provides creativity and leadership by creating promotional assets and designing and implementing community communications issued by the Division of Inclusive Excellence. This includes planning, researching, writing and editing content for news items, events, social media, websites, email campaigns, newsletters, student/faculty profiles, short video clips and other projects as assigned.
Develops culturally sensitive marketing communications for external stakeholders as needed.
Develops content for and maintains the web presence for the Committee on Elon History and Memory.
Supports communications with advisory boards and other groups associated with the division.

Knowledge of concepts and issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Excellent oral, writing and editing skills; ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; and ability to write opinion articles, speeches and other persuasive compositions.
Proficiency in AP style, using social media and online communications.
Experience adapting messages for multiple media platforms and working within a web content management system such a WordPress.
Ability to cultivate and maintain a wide variety of professional relationships with diverse constituencies by developing rapport with others and establishing positive working relationships, both internally and externally.
Excellent interpersonal skills including a high level of emotional intelligence, the ability to exercise discretion dealing with confidential and sensitive information, maintain neutrality and lead difficult conversations.
Strong multitasking skills and an ability to manage competing priorities.
Must have significant experience with Microsoft Office programs as well as confidence in communicating complex ideas via social media platforms.
Experience with Adobe Photoshop and/or InDesign, graphic design and still photography is preferred.
