University Communications is looking for an experienced Senior Writer to provide coverage for the university's flagship digital and print publications. Our writers brainstorm, report, and write news articles, features, and other content supporting the editorial and strategic priorities of our office and the university. Team members also provide broad-based editorial support as needed for university publications, websites, newsletters, and social media efforts.
The ideal candidate is a versatile, creative, and enterprising writer who can report and write comfortably and knowledgably on deadline about a wide range of topics and subjects across the university's various division. They will speak with distinguished faculty members about their latest research and discoveries, uncover compelling stories about the university's amazing alumni and students, and talk to renowned experts about the most important issues of our time—COVID-19, artificial intelligence, alternative energy, the human genome, climate change, health disparities, disinformation and the forces that threaten democracy, and so much more. They will also spend time on our campuses covering events and talking to affiliates, including undergraduate students, for a variety of stories and projects. They will also conceptualize and/or contribute to the creation of content that augments storytelling, including photography, videos, interactive graphics, and alternative forms of storytelling.
The Senior Writer must be ambitious, proactive, and a skilled writer, with the demonstrated ability to write in-depth features and profiles, craft thoughtful Q+As, and distill complex subject matter in a way that resonates with a large, diverse, and curious readership, with the university community and beyond. The pace of the work varies and will require a team member with a knack for balancing a workload including quick-turn news stories as well as longer, more in-depth pieces. Candidates must be able to tell stories worthy of a highly intelligent and engaged audience including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Identifies, researches, and writes multiple articles per week for print and digital publications produced by the Office of Communications, including the Hub and Johns Hopkins Magazine.
Covers various university beats as assigned, keeping abreast of research and other developments in designated areas; communicating regularly with faculty, staff, and students; and reporting back to colleagues.
Develops and refines story ideas and pitches them to editors.
Provides broad-based editorial support as needed for university publications, websites, newsletters, and social media efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree.
At least three years of related experience required; magazine and/or multimedia editorial experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent writing skills, with a demonstrated ability to write in various formats and to convey complex subject matter to a general audience.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new editorial content for print and digital platforms, while also maintaining a collaborative relationship with editors and other staff.
Organized, detail-oriented, and adept at juggling multiple assignments to meet deadlines.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
