DIRECTOR OF MULTIMEDIA The Houston Chronicle, an award-winning newsroom in the largest city in Texas, is seeking a dynamic, ambitious, innovative leader to join our multimedia team. The Director will coordinate visual coverage of breaking news, enterprise and projects across our digital, print and social platforms. We are looking for a great coach and communicator who drives performance for staff members. You are a leader with compassion and vision who will guide professional development both in print and digital, growing visual storytellers. You will also help journalists across the room be innovative storytellers.
Responsibilities:
Work with department heads on planning and collaboration.
Adept at working across platforms- print, web and social.
Management of equipment, maintenance, ordering.
Coaching for performance from your staff.
Help think strategically about how to best deploy resources.
Maintain a high standard of quality.
Must be adept at video editing on Adobe Premiere.
Help manage staff schedules, assignments, equipment and budget in order to maximize our coverage abilities.
Advocate for staff needs.
Assign and edit photo/video staff, edit content created by other newsroom staff, negotiate freelance contracts, acquire courtesy and paid content from other sources and choose the right image for each platform.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or other related field or any combination of experience.
Five years of supervisory experience and more than 10 years as a photojournalist.
Demonstrated visual acumen in choosing photos for publication, with a wide-ranging knowledge of news, features and sports photo editing.
Experience with visual storytelling across multiple platforms, including the web, social platforms and third-party news apps.
Must have strong prioritization, organization and communication skills.
Must show ability to think ambitiously about multimedia storytelling and work with graphics and video journalists to conceptualize and execute seamless presentations.
