Director of Enterprise Marketing and Promotions - Student & Campus Life

Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.
At the University, communication services are carried out through a matrixed organizational system in which University Relations houses the departments of News (Cornell Chronicle), Media Relations (pitching and servicing media requests), Brand (cornell.edu, multimedia production, brand management and governance), Strategic Communications (communications plans, key messaging, social media management), and Cornellians (digital alumni publication). Communicators in Cornell colleges, schools, and units regularly collaborate with, and consult, University Relations departments as a resource to ensure all Cornell communicators share a mission to enhance and preserve the university's brand and reputation as a top research institution and a leader in higher education, and to support and promote critical programs that serve the university's teaching, research, and public engagement mission.
Student and Campus Life's Communication and Marketing team oversees the division's strategic communication and marketing plans to raise visibility and awareness of SCL activities, programs, and resources for diverse audiences including students (current and prospective), faculty, staff, families, alumni and local community members.
The Director of SCL Enterprise Marketing and Promotions leads a diverse team responsible for the dynamic and effective marketing and promotional needs of SCL's 210M revenue-generating enterprise services which includes Retail Services and Print Services, Cornell Dining and Catering, Cornell Housing, as well as Conference and Event Services. The Director will oversee a complex marketing budget to serve each enterprise service. Using multi-channel marketing tools such as print, digital, social media, special events and other platforms, this role will oversee the planning, managing and refinement of innovative and impactful marketing campaigns that ensure increased brand awareness and participation while also ensuring the alignment and support of institutional, divisional and departmental strategic initiatives. The Director, in partnership with their divisional team and senior leadership, will develop long and short-term marketing strategies and advertising campaigns based on sales and market analysis with the goal of obtaining key objectives, including increasing revenues and ensuring consistent messaging across unique portfolios.
A successful Director of SCL Enterprise Marketing and Promotions will:
- Be a visionary leader who proactively thinks of creative solutions to unique and complex problems or challenges while also providing clear guidance and direction for accomplishing the desired outcomes and goals of the department, division, and the overall institution.
- Build, maintain and foster strong stakeholder relationships to effectively build consensus with multiple diverse teams or work groups as well as cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- Possess strong accountability but is able to delegate according to best manage multiple projects simultaneously in order to meet competing deadlines.
- Provide regular coaching and guidance that supports the team's professional development goals as well as enhance comradery and builds trust.
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable as trends change and business priorities adjust to meet emerging needs
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field of study; Minimum of 5 years of experience in marketing and/or communications with multiple internal and external stakeholders or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Exemplary written and oral communication skills
- Working understanding or experience with strategic, brand, and multimedia communications, web content management in Drupal or similar content management tools, template creation, and content publication, print and web communication materials, with the ability to compose multi-tiered, cross-channel communications, Knowledge of AP style
- Exceptional graphic design skills for promotional materials and social media
- Experience in data analysis to evaluate success of existing communications and influence comms strategies
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
- Must be willing to travel as needed to attend industry conferences in order to stay on top of best practices and trends
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in higher education communications or in communications for complex organizations
- Experience with producing executive communications and working with sensitive or privileged information
- Experience with developing and implementing short- and long-term strategic communications plans
- Writing for fundraising and advancement/development
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The successful applicant could work a hybrid schedule but would be expected to work on campus as business needs require. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.
