Summary Position The Web Application Developer is a member of the Office of University Communications, focusing on developing public-facing web applications. The position is responsible maintaining and extending existing systems, including the university's primary web content management system (www.elon.edu), news database system (www.elon.edu/news), internal APIs, and additional CMS features. The developer will be responsible for developing WordPress based themes, plugins, and native Gutenberg blocks primarily using PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, CSS and HTML. This role works closely with writers and designers in the University Communications office to ensure they have the best tools available to create and manage content. This position requires a self-guided, full-stack developer, capable of learning new technologies and troubleshooting quickly, and works closely with and receives guidance from Elon University's Senior Director for Online Communications, Front End Developer, Database Administrator and Systems Administrator. Additionally, the Web Applications Developer will provide support to the campus community, including Faculty and Staff, with website questions and issues.

Special Skills or Experience Advanced proficiency with the following programming languages and web technologies: PHP, JavaScript/ES6, React, the Redux framework, Node.js, jQuery, MySQL, HTML, and CSS.
Strong database development skills, such as database design, complex queries, large data sets, and performance tuning and optimization.
Advanced proficiency in developing custom WordPress themes, plugins, and native Gutenberg Blocks, and working with WordPress hooks (actions and filters).
Advanced proficiency managing the WordPress CMS and managing large WordPress Multisite installations.
Advanced proficiency working with and consuming data from REST and GraphQL APIs.
Advanced proficiency building internal APIs and working with the WordPress REST API (wp-json).
Proficiency developing custom web applications using PHP frameworks, preferably Laravel.
Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting web applications and Linux, NGINX and MySQL servers, and effectively communicating with IT engineers to resolve issues.
Experience managing DevOps operations such as distributed version control and source code management (using Github), continuous integration, task runners such as Gulp, Grunt, or Webpack, and deployment using Github Actions.
Good project management skills for complex projects.

Good verbal and written skills to provide consultation and training for website creation and management.

General Purpose of Position The Web Application Developer develops WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks, and additional web applications that comprise the universitys core web content management system. The developer works with the Senior Director for Online communications and Web Designer & Front-End developer in the Office of University Communications to build and maintain tools used internally to manage the universitys core content, and by departments across campus to manage their individual department websites. This position also helps manage internal devops tools and processes to ensure higher deployment frequency, higher quality deliverables, and increased collaboration across the web development team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Creating, deploying and maintaining web applications for Elon Universitys public websites, including the following duties:
Work in partnership with the other web team members to develop WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks, and additional companion web applications that comprise the universitys core content management system. Develop applications, processes, and additional infrastructure that provides university faculty and staff effective, easy to use, and scalable web content and data management systems. Ensure that systems are safe and secure against cybersecurity threats.
Work in partnership with the other web team members to maintain the University Communications source code repositories in Github and ensure that development follows established processes and works as intended. Build, test, and maintain infrastructure and tools to allow for the speedy development and release of software and reduce occurrence of errors and improve customer experience.
Provide website maintenance and technical support for stakeholders across the university. Maintenance includes modifying and improving existing codebases to ensure stability, reliability, and accessibility. Technical support includes monitoring the web@elon.edu email address and the University Communications Web Team support forms to offer assistance with web-related issues.
Work in partnership with the other web team members to implement new technologies and features and stay current with the latest trends in web development and infrastructure management processes. Provide quality assurance testing on new features and functionality added to all university websites.
Provide web accessibility testing and remediation against WCAG requirements using various accessibility tools and resources including Dubbot, WAVE, axe DevTools, color contrast testers, etc.

Education and Experience Bachelors degree or higher from a four-year college or university, with a major in computer science or related field is highly preferred. A minimum of five years experience in web application development is required, building custom WordPress sites and plugins, preferably in large WordPress multisite environments.
