University Communications and Marketing at Carnegie Mellon University is searching for an experienced Social Media Content Specialist, with demonstrated expertise in social media reporting and writing, crafting social media content for specific platforms both current and emerging, and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders. The social media specialist for content is responsible for using social media and multimedia tools to tell the university's many and wide-ranging stories with a rich and authentic voice. It is a highly visible position that offers a unique opportunity to be part of a team working to shape the digital presence of Carnegie Mellon, engage with a diverse audience, and ensure CMU is a national leader in social media. This dynamic role requires flexibility. Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary. On a daily basis, some tasks could include capturing media content (photo/video), conducting interviews and participating in brainstorming meetings.
The specialist for content is expected to meet frequently with colleagues both within UCM and across campus to develop social media campaigns that align with priorities and advance the collective mission of the university.
Core Responsibilities Include:
- Conceive, arrange, and produce content featuring faculty and students and/or addressing institutional news.
- Create compelling story ideas and engaging written content for various social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok, as well as emerging platforms.
- Create compelling and engaging multimedia projects for social media, such as Instagram Reels and TikTok videos, aligning with the university's strategic goals.
- Collaborate with graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and other creative professionals to produce high-quality visual content for Instagram Stories and other platforms.
- Be a part of the core team working to develop and implement social media content strategies that align with Carnegie Mellon's brand and objectives.
- Stay constantly updated on emerging platforms and tools, making recommendations to enhance audience engagement in the content space.
- Participate in weekly content meetings and contribute ideas to extend the reach of the Carnegie Mellon story across social media.
- Stay informed about the university's events, achievements, and initiatives to effectively promote them on social media platforms.
- Research and stay informed about the latest trends, news, and events relevant to the university and higher education sector.
- Explore opportunities to collaborate with influencers as well as student workers.

You should demonstrate:
- Proven track record of creating engaging social media content that resonates with various target audiences.
- Strong writing and editing skills that illustrate impeccable attention to detail.
- A passion for storytelling, creativity, and staying current with the evolving social media landscape.
- Strong understanding of social media trends, algorithms, and best practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field. Or equivalent experience will be considered.
- At least 5 years of experience creating content for social media. Experience in a higher education or large institutional setting is helpful but not required.
- Strong interpersonal skills. Able to work independently, as well as collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects on multiple platforms.
- Meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in using social media management tools, analytics platforms, and scheduling tools (Sprout Social, Meltwater, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with higher education issues.
- Experience with design, photo editing, and video editing software/tools.
- Experience with producing and publishing social media livestreams.
