Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS Radio, Television and Online serves San Diego and Imperial counties with news, information, entertainment and cultural content. The organization presents local and national content that is valued and trusted by the community. Under the supervision of the News Director, the Senior Producer leads KPBS's daily radio news magazine program Midday Edition, ensuring the program is accurate, timely, engaging, and meets our news mission. The Senior Producer brings creative ideas and fresh approaches to Midday Edition's meaningful conversations about issues that shape our diverse, complex and unique region. The program segments will engage and inspire our audiences, and offer perspectives in ways that bring us together.
This position supervises the host and producers of Midday Edition and works closely with the News department's managers, anchors, hosts, reporters, producers, production and engineering staff to plan, create and critique the show.

Management: 45%
Responsible for the daily planning, production and execution of KPBS's Midday Edition on terrestrial signals, kpbs.org and other on-demand platforms, while following the editorial agenda of KPBS News.
Supervise hosts and producers including scheduling, and provides on-going feedback and performance evaluations.
Oversee news specials as pitched or assigned (i.e., elections, civic engagement).
Hold daily and weekly feedback and planning meetings, and group and individual airchecks.
Communicate daily rundown and production schedules with production and news staff.
Editorial: 30%
Organize the overall show order for flow and high production values.
Work with producers and hosts on segment pitches, planning and execution.
Identify produced features and packages that can be incorporated into the show.
Maintain archives.
Producing: 10%
Edit web components of program segments.
Research, write and produce segments for the show when needed.
Administration: 10%
Attend newsroom and KPBS meetings; responsible for appropriate record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment.
Responsible for following sound journalism and ethics practices, and for ensuring that all releases and clearances are obtained.

Qualifications Knowledge and Abilities
Proven experience creating, editing and managing broadcast news content.
Demonstrated experience producing live, remote in field, live-to-tape, and/or pre-produced broadcast news or news magazine programs.
Demonstrated experience producing high-quality news with excellent news judgment.
Demonstrated ability to work within a live news environment.
Ability to understand news formats including two-ways, produced features, audio postcards, signature segments, series, using audience voice recordings, and production and pacing.
Ability to work quickly and make timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention.
Ability to work under multiple daily deadlines, plan ahead and prioritize multiple tasks.
Demonstrated success as a creative, effective and forward-thinking team leader.
Ability to generate creative ideas and fresh approaches to familiar subjects.
Demonstrated news-gathering, writing and editorial skills for broadcast, web and social media required.
Ability to demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Must have valid driver's license, appropriate auto insurance coverage and access to personal vehicle when KPBS vehicle is unavailable.
Experience
Minimum 4 years full-time professional experience as broadcast news or news magazine producer.
Minimum 2 years full-time newsroom supervisory experience: supervision of professional journalists to include hiring, managing, coaching and evaluating
Education
Bachelor's degree in journalism or additional experience in a newsroom may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills
Daily broadcast news, broadcast news magazine, public affairs program or podcast experience.
Short and long-term planning.
Broad knowledge of current San Diego regional issues.
Audio and/or video recording and editing experience.
Experience working in public media.
Fluency in Spanish.

Candidates must reside in California, or be willing to relocate, and live within a commutable distance to the SDSU campus at the time of hire.
