Position Summary
Reporting to the deputy spokesperson, the Media and Public Information Communications Coordinator supports University Communications and is responsible for researching, organizing, coordinating and analyzing the effectiveness of communications products, including press releases, statements, stories for web channels, speeches and talking points for complex and wide-ranging topics and issues. The position will work with all areas of University Communications, MSU’s network of communicators and various unit and department leaders to gather relevant and timely information to help coordinate communications to MSU’s various stakeholders.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Leads the tracking, tagging and measuring Media and Public Information unit’s effectiveness in its communications tactics, including measuring media sentiment on issues and proactive media opportunities through Cision; and generate and analyze monthly reports to inform leaders on key issues impacting the university
Identifies sources of information; researches, surveys and interviews to obtain information for communications products for issues
Supplement and support executive social media strategy
Drafts, and distributes communications including press releases, remarks and talking points for both executive communications needs and issue management
Web publishing and content management
Help cultivate and create proactive media opportunities with local media outlets, including press releases and pitches
Serves as a liaison with other university departments and colleges
Serves as crisis communications team coordinator for emergency and crisis responses
Contributes to editing of other material within University Communications
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in journalism, telecommunications, or public relations. One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations; composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media; and/or marketing, advertising, and creative service; and/or experience in a field related to area of employment; combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications
Four-year college degree program in marketing, advertising, public relations or related field
This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations
Knowledge of AP writing style and editing, and web writing
Must demonstrate initiative, good judgement and the ability to own projects and manage multiple tasks/assignments
Must be able to work effectively with team members and contacts
Ability to set and meet goals while working both independently and as part of a team
