Job Description:
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science's Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for shaping and executing overarching communications and marketing strategy for the institution and advancing key priorities of the President and the Advancement Office. This position supervises a communications team and serves as primary point of contact for all central communication initiatives related to messaging and communications, marketing, reputation management, and crisis communications.

Job Duties:
Supports senior management in achieving the aims and objectives outlined within the UMCES overall mission to lead the way toward better management of Maryland's natural resources and the protection and restoration of the Chesapeake Bay, provides sound advice to help state and national leaders manage the environment, and prepare future scientists to meet the global challenges of the 21stcentury.
Develops and manages the University's marketing strategy to increase visibility across key public constituencies.
Oversees the University's media relations strategy and promotes scientific findings to policymakers and the general public by working with key regional and national environmental reporters and editors.
Coordinates press releases on major research, news, and events that support UMCES' strategic communications priorities.
Connects faculty experts with reporters and provides media training to faculty for interviews with print, broadcast, and onlinejournalists.
Serves as final editor of news releases, publications, e-newsletter, brochures, reports, correspondence, ads, invitations, programs, speeches, presentations and other documents.
Manages UMCES digital profile including the website, UMCES.edu, UMCES' social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn), and Constant Contact to drive engagement with our audiences.
Manages the conceptualization, design, and production of annual publications, collateral, and central communications products. This includes managing the outsourcing of creative services.
Manages the University's brand and provides campus communications partners with strategic communications counsel and brand resources.
Manages the University's reputation management and crisis communications plan and responses.
Serves as key member of crisis communications team providing leadership on campus crisis and emergency communications.
Supports presidential communications, including preparing public remarks and communications.
Supports Advancement in the development of donor communications.
Assists in producing UMCES events and associated collateral, such as Commencement, legislative receptions, and institutional celebrations.
Serves as institutional communications liaison to the University System of Maryland Communications.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must posess a Bachelors degree and five to seven years experience in marketing, media relations, public relations, and/or journalism. The applicant must also have superior written and oral communication skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications :
The ideal applicant will have a strong understanding of issues and trends impacting the environment, ability to multi-task, excellent organizational skills, proficiency in utilizing Word and other Microsoft Office programs and Google, understanding and working knowledge of social media and Internet applications, demonstrates the ability to interact comfortably, gaining credibility with a wide range of university stakeholders and constituents at all levels, excellent relationship building, communication, and influencing skills, ability to support a mission and strategic vision.

Salary Range: $90,000 to $115,000
Additional Information:
UMCES has multiple locations across Maryland, located in Frostburg, Solomons, Baltimore, Cambridge, College Park, and Annapolis. The applicant will select a home site from this list. The position is open to a hybrid telework plan designed to balance the needs of the employee with the need for in-person collaboration at UMCES locations.There is an expectation to travel to all locations within MD as needed.
