 We&#8217;re looking for two experienced&#xa0; Reporters &#xa0;who can use sophisticated interviewing, investigative and database skills to illuminate problems and find the most promising solutions &#8211; then turn those findings into engaging narratives and other forms of storytelling. We want you to use empathy to bring new voices to our coverage, to consider engagement as you work, and to coordinate closely with photographers and graphic artists to add impact to your work. 
 Successful candidates will have experience covering sensitive social issues and complex systems of interwoven governmental and nonprofit agencies. Experience covering mental health issues, programs and policies is a plus.

 Responsibilities 
 
 Be curious and widely read about mental health issues, and be ready with a diverse, ever-growing story list that mixes daily stories with longer-term enterprise, solutions and watchdog pieces. 
 Report with humanity: Use good, empathetic interview techniques to gain a better understanding of your story and the people in it. 
 Write with authority based on understanding of your subject matter. Write with a flair that shows your excellent command of language. Self-edit for crisp, clean copy on multiple platforms. 
 Produce enterprise stories and stay ahead of news by anticipating or uncovering developments. 
 Be comfortable filing public records requests and flexing your investigative muscles on a daily basis. 
 Analyze databases to find your own story ideas. 
 Collaborate with reporting teams around the newsroom, where issues of mental and behavioral health intersect with subjects like education and homelessness. 
 Work closely with photographers and graphic artists to illustrate and produce packages with humanity and impact. 
 Pitch solutions stories that interrogate responses to problems. 
 Prioritize inclusive coverage, developing a range of sources and story ideas that represent the rich cultural diversity of our region. 
 Engagement is baked into our DNA, so it should be part of your reporting. It might include public (or Zoom) speaking, facilitating conversations in person or on social media or other events. We&#8217;re interested in experimenting, so we want your creative ideas for how we can better interact with our community.

 Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health struggles have reached crisis proportions throughout the world. The Seattle region and Washington state are no different. This crisis touches people from all demographic groups, and it is made worse by the pervasive stigma attached to mental illness. Journalists can play an important role in destigmatizing mental illnesses while educating consumers and holding providers, social services and government agencies accountable for getting people the help they need. 
 We&#8217;re looking for a highly organized and passionate&#xa0; Mental Health Project &#xa0; Editor , one who will creatively coach&#xa0;reporters who handle breaking news along with complex, solutions-oriented enterprise and watchdog stories across multiple platforms. 
 You&#xa0;must have strong story editing, digital and social media skills, as well as&#xa0;a basic understanding of the complex and nuanced issues around mental and behavioral health.&#xa0;Ideally, you are comfortable working with an engagement editor to find innovative ways to engage community groups, policy makers and individuals impacted by or working on mental health issues. You also must be able to effectively communicate with partners in our community-funded journalism.  Responsibilities 
 
 Act as the audience engagement web producer for the Mental Health reporting team, posting and producing their stories for online readers and managing social media updates for the project. 
 Balance pragmatism and innovation while promoting and polishing the project&#8217;s digital presence. 
 Write news alerts, monitor activity, and cultivate social media feeds to reach readers quickly. 
 Continue to build the project&#8217;s online audience while maintaining (and growing) community partnerships. 
 Help our reporters incorporate audience insights into their coverage. 
 Contribute to grant reports through careful and thoughtful analysis of information. 
 Demonstrate creativity and a desire to actively work with the community as it pertains to the coverage. 
 Crowdsource to help deepen our reporting. Solicit and work with guest writers. 
 Plan online and in-person project events. &#xa0; 
 Track and analyze analytics and experiment with other Newsroom engagement editors and the broader department. 
 
 You will have the opportunity to occasionally&#xa0;report stories based on community interest. Successful candidates will have some understanding of mental-health systems and a proven track record of building and expanding communities, online and in person.
