PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, the Senior Communications Specialist is responsible for developing, planning, managing, reviewing, and implementing a wide range of communications in support of Enrollment Management and the departments, programs and activities in the Division. This will be executed through all media platforms, digital communication, social media platforms, web content, annual reports, press releases, scripts, presentations, and other forms of communication. Additionally, the Senior Communications Specialist will facilitate collaboration between any department-based communication and design staff (professional and para-professional) to promote Enrollment Management, congruent marketing messages, and project a positive, consistent image.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Under the guidance of the Vice President, responsible for day-to-day enrollment marketing and communications operations including lead oversight of the PA/CS II position or other staff, engages in enrollment marketing, strategic planning, enrollment project leadership, and guiding a focus on long-term enrollment marketing objectives. Researches, designs and produces comm plans, content marketing and assets for use in building brand awareness, increasing inquiries, applications and enrollments; assists with long-range editorial planning and strategy for Enrollment Management needs, providing consistency of messaging across all formats; continually seeking new techniques for communicating information in print and digital platforms; develops themes and concepts in overseeing creation of content and communication materials. Serves as a prime contact for internal and external enrollment consultants, vendors and firms, and handles more sensitive and complex media contacts related to Enrollment Management; responds to immediate requests concerning enrollment marketing to the University management and media when the Vice President is not available.
- Develops strategies to promote the image of CSUMB to primary high school and community college target markets and their influencers; determines contemporary and cutting-edge techniques and approaches for reaching target audiences that are effective; identifies the needs and interests of various constituent groups; conceives communication and marketing concepts, ideas and campaigns for Enrollment Management.
- Develops creative content and creative vendor management for digital/social creative, copywriting, website copy/development and Salesforce as well as social content for multiple profiles within current and emerging digital/socialhttps://apptrkr.com/get_redirect.php?id=4629538&targetURL=[A1] platforms; spearheads several specific campaign programs, including but not limited to: influencer/creator programs, alternative content/art creation with graphic designers, digital/platform-specific events, follow design trends, patterns, and cutting-edge web approaches relevant to CSUMB's diverse target markets.
- Oversees publications and marketing outreach functions; regulates the Student Life digital signage; establishes operating procedures and provides recommendations on marketing/communications processes for Student Life departments and programs, and the division of Student Affairs. Review Student Affairs large scale promotional programs.
- Creates and maintains relationships with individuals and departments on campus. Works closely with campus partners to create strategic marketing to support the division of Student Affairs and Student Life. Constructs a network of appropriate vendors to support product purchases for the needs of Student Affairs and Student Life. Coordinates an advisory committee for Student Affairs communications. Participates in various campus committees and large-scale campus events.
- In collaboration with Information Technology, recommends equipment and technology tools to support Enrollment Management communication strategies. Records and tracks current technology devices or equipment and facilitates SEO for page optimization across websites to ensure search results are relevant and to create a positive user experience, growing website traffic, lead volume and brand awareness for enrollment management goals.
- Contributes to departmental program review, annual reports, strategic planning, and goal setting; attends seminars and conferences to maintain program and professional development.
Other Functions:
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned for the Office of the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media and/or marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote and position the university. Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.
Knowledge of: Extensive knowledge and advanced ability to leverage written communications, research, and interviewing skills to create high quality, on brand content. Advanced understanding of grammar and Associated Press style, able to write and edit content to writing style and brand standards. Demonstrates customer focused skills and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Good organization and project management skills, and the ability to collaborate closely with a creative team. Skilled in media relations and marketing principals and best practices within Higher Education sector. Advanced knowledge of practices, principles and techniques related to public affairs, media relations, and marketing; protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations; media outlets including print, television, and radio; interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages; market research, summary statistics as they relate to research, and related techniques; applicable software packages; basic web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media.
Skills: Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media. Demonstrated organizational skills.
Ability to: Keep abreast of public policy and public affairs issues; appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information; provide lead work direction; create and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across campus and advise them on university identity and style standards. Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective; effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques. Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to university officials and media outlets. Ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns. Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Entry to the third level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree and/or five years of progressively responsible experience in developing and deploying communications strategies. Expert knowledge in management tools such as Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Adobe Creative Suite and/or other platforms. Experience with Microsoft Suite and Google Suite. Demonstrated technical literacy. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, Salesforce, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information systems. Ability to coordinate the efforts of professional staff in the accomplishment of marketing and communications goals.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
