The Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Security in Journalism is seeking an Associate Research Scholar to work on deepening our understanding of the 21st century information ecology, including journalism and social media.
We are seeking candidates who demonstrate a good understanding of how the news media operates, including the process of reporting, editing and fact-checking. Since the near-term projects in the Center will focus on the pandemic as both a case study and a learning experience, background in a medical field or health is a plus.
Among other work, the research conducted at the Center will involve examining the evolving public sphere, the role of journalism, the impact of new technologies, including but not limited to lessons from the pandemic, and the ethics and practical considerations for a healthier public sphere, including science reporting and investigative work.
Familiarity with academic research and peer-review, ideally including experience with such publications is also a benefit. Grounding in statistics as well as research methods such as surveys or analyses of existing data are helpful.
Candidates should include a statement of research along with their CVs and name three references (who will be contacted for the finalists). This is a 12-month, renewable, in-person position in New York City (with a moving allowance), a PhD is not required but it is not a disadvantage as long as the candidate is also willing to understand and work with public outreach and writing. Teaching is not required for this position, but there may be teaching opportunities within the school.
