The journalist in this position manages the essential news portfolio at The Philadelphia Inquirer and thus plays a central and defining role in guiding our talented staff of editors and reporters and in determining the news we deliver every day to our audience.
The DME is responsible for supervising and directing three critical areas of news and enterprise: Politics & Governing, Education and Justice & Injustice. This person will coordinate coverage with senior managers on our breaking news operation, the Now Desk, as well as the I-Team’s quick-turn investigative unit. On major breaking news, the DME for News supervises coverage across all desks and works in conjunction with the Editor, the Managing Editor and other newsroom leaders to deliver a timely and thorough report when it matters most.
Duties and Responsibilities
Direct daily news coverage and enterprise in key coverage areas to ensure ambitious delivery of news and information across The Inquirer’s platforms.
Serve as lead coordinating editor on major breaking news, ensuring that the different parts of the newsroom are on mission and working in concert to deliver timely and comprehensive coverage.
Work with Managing Editor for Content, the Programming & Audience team and with the Digital Desk to develop a coverage strategy that advances The Inquirer’s audience goals.
Collaborate closely and collegially with editors on the News Desk on daily and weekly management of the team; communicate coverage plans and ambitions with clarity and consistency to editors and reporters.
Advance and support Inquirer For All initiatives and enforce new policies and procedures aimed at producing an anti-racist newsroom.
Adhere to safety protocols for journalists and closely monitor news events to make sure guidelines are followed.
Job Qualifications
Experience as a senior editor with direct responsibility for news coverage, developing content strategies and guiding reporters and editors in a competitive news environment.
A strong background as a reporter, ideally in several areas of coverage.
Well-developed management skills, including an ability to guide and inspire journalists; a collaborative mindset; strategic thinking when it comes to coverage; an aptitude for communicating goals and plans with clarity; and a talent for hiring, coaching and career development.
