The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, staff and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age.
Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity to respond to these challenges.
Formally established in July 2019, CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena.
The Division connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, School of Information, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Berkeley D-Lab, Computational Precision Heath, and the Center for Computational Biology.
The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based undergraduate programs in data science, computing, statistics and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.
CDSS is going through the process to become UC Berkeley's next college, which has not happened since the early 1960s. Once the College of CDSS is established, it will hold three of the top five majors on campus.
This position writes and develops storytelling content that aligns with communication strategies and targets key audiences, including prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students, donors, alumni, faculty, staff, partners, and reporters. Seeks out information and analysis on research, education, activities in computing and data science; writes stories and content for various platforms and audiences, conducts interviews, and secures relevant photography, video, and graphics.

50% Researches, writes, and edits content for internal and external audiences. Communications material may include analytical, interpretive, journalistic, and promotional/persuasive projects.
25% Pitches and produces stories, articles, profiles, briefings, social media posts, collateral, and other communications material.
15% Independently researches, selects sources for interview, and ensures accuracy and clarity of written pieces.
10% Works collaboratively with communication team members, student interns, and other staff and faculty in Computing, Data Science, and Society as well as communicators across campus and partner organizations.
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related area and/or equivalent experience and training.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
Thorough knowledge of AP editorial style and publication guidelines.
Knowledge of educational institutions such as UC Berkeley, including mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,000 - $86,400, not to exceed $93,100. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits.
