Under the direction of the Executive Director of Development-VMC, the Director of Development-VMC will be responsible for supporting fundraising programs for the School of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on securing philanthropic support for the two veterinary medical campaigns (Davis, San Diego).
The goals are to help build a pipeline of grateful client prospects, alumni and friends of the school, engage clinicians, administrators, volunteers and others in the grateful client process.
Serve as a member of the VMC Campaign team and support the implementation and coordination of the veterinary medical campaign.
Help support VMTH leaders and staff, to assist in the implementation of the grateful client pipeline and have a regular physical presence in the hospital (at least three days/week).
Prepare and deliver proposals as needed to a variety of audiences to increase awareness of the program.
Help Identify new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors, engage with faculty and staff for referrals, help develop materials and organize related programs/events; cultivate, steward, and solicit donor prospects.
Develop relationships, build trust and foster working partnerships with research, faculty, client services, Chiefs of Service, executive leadership and staff of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) to help with the generation of high net-worth leads and identification of major gift prospects capable of making a major gift of $50K+ in order to help reach individual fundraising goals and that of the unit.
Under broad direction from the Executive Director of Development-VMC, serves as a critical member of the School of Veterinary Medicine development team.
Ensures a high level of effectiveness and service and works in concert with all UC Davis Development colleagues. A dedicated fundraiser, the Director of Development-VMC is required, at minimum, to secure 120 face-to-face donor visits per year. As a communications expert, the incumbent is an excellent listener with exceptional interpersonal skills and a positive, collaborative work style. As such, the incumbent possesses the skills and ability to draft correspondence, utilize social media, make phone calls and engage all communication channels in order to personally conduct proactive outreach to prospects.
Highly organized, strategic and self-motivated, the incumbent, utilizing the UC Davis Prospect Management services and systems, will work to identify potential new donor prospects who will then be personally visited and either qualified face-to-face for continued cultivation, or disqualified as a major gift prospect.
Success as a fundraiser at UC Davis requires the incumbent to also be a collaborative team player who adheres to the university's Principles of Community and complies with UC Davis Development policies.
The Director of Development-VMC is a part of the larger development organization and will report to an experienced and dedicated team manager who provides support, training and guidance. Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional or volunteer fundraising experience involving managing a major gift portfolio and securing major gifts of $50K or more; or equivalent transferrable professional experience including strategic relationship development and portfolio management, preferably in higher education.
- Experience working in a metrics fundraising environment to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives; including demonstrated knowledge of proven identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Demonstrated experience in developing strategic relationships with individual donors and prospective donors, foundations, and other philanthropic organizations and researching, building and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects with a goal of raising philanthropic support.
- Strong organizational and time management skills and meticulous attention to detail, the ability to set, negotiate, and meet priorities and produce high-quality work under multiple deadlines and priorities. Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
- Proven ability to interface effectively with prospects, donors, volunteer leaders and faculty or other organizational leaders. Strong professional ethics, discretion and judgement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in working with human health hospital fundraising or veterinary hospital fundraising, university-level alumni or other donor constituency groups and experience/success in working on employee, faculty or staff giving.
- Thorough working knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc. Strong professional ethics, discretion and judgement.
- Awareness, knowledge, and skill in applying diversity, equity and inclusion to one's work. A profound belief in the value of a diverse and safe workforce and a commitment to achieve this goal through collaboration and team building, working cooperatively with a diverse group of department and campus constituencies.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising: 80%
- Manages a portfolio of donors capable of giving $50K or more, with a focus on qualification and cultivation of new donors for the School of Veterinary Medicine. Identifies, cultivates, solicits and/or stewards major gift prospects and donors. Keeps Contact reports current in Advance.
- Prepares and submits annual individual development business plan and performance goals and objectives for prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, as well as revenue goals.
- Evaluates programs using financial feasibility studies and market research, including planning and evaluating annual solicitation programs and making recommendations for improvements. Participates in short and long- range strategic planning. Develops strategies within existing policy guidelines.
- Writes proposals for solicitation of individual prospects.
- Recruits, trains, and supports key volunteers who assist in advancement efforts.
- Assists with the donor stewardship programs; participates in annual reporting to donors and implement other strategies to carefully steward donors.
- Provides analysis and information regarding qualification and donor engagement activities and makes recommendations to upper management for program changes or development of new programs as required.
- Participates in strategically relevant special events.
- Must comply with UC Davis Development policies and utilize the services and systems of the UC Davis Development Prospect Management System (PMATS) and Advance database.
- This position requires excellent communication and conduct across all levels of the organization that is collegial, collaborative, and in alignment with the UC Davis Principles of Community. As a communications expert, the incumbent is an excellent listener, with exceptional interpersonal skills and a positive, collaborative work style. As such, the incumbent possesses the skills and ability to draft correspondence, utilize social media, make phone calls, conduct high level in person meetings, and engages all communication channels in order to personally conduct proactive outreach to prospects.
- This position cultivates relationships through purposeful engagement and strategically moves prospects toward gift decisions, which requires the development and presentation of a compelling case for support that is effectively articulated to donors. The incumbent is expected to steward existing and new donor relationships. This position requires good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works independently, collaboratively, and collegially as part of a diverse, matrix organization.
Development Operations: 20%
- Provides operational support for the VMC fundraising Campaigns.
- Adheres to the organization's consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork.
- Supports Grateful Client pipeline process in coordination w/overall school development.
- Prepare timely contact reports, records proposals and coordinates with colleagues across campus on donor strategy.
- Participates in prospect coordination system (PMATS utilize Prospect Management &Tracking System), SVM databases, research offices & screening programs to identify & qualify prospects, plan & maintain prospect management & evaluation records of assigned prospects.
- Participates in appropriate projects, training, & meetings for campus-wide development professionals, arranged by University Development.

Work Environment
