The Director of Media Relations advances the university’s mission by developing and executing a comprehensive media strategy encompassing campus, local, national and international media, and serves as UMBC’s primary media spokesperson.

Serve as university spokesperson, responding to media inquiries and sharing information proactively with journalists; manage news conferences, press briefings and media on campus
Develop and execute a comprehensive media strategy comprising campus, local, national and international media
Provide expert strategic consultation, training and support, including media briefings and logistical support, for media relations to the University President and members of senior leadership
Partner with colleagues in University Communications and Marketing in executing media strategy, especially across social media channels and in providing media support to UMBC faculty, staff and students as appropriate
Serve as a member of the university’s crisis communications team and support all emergency management efforts
Cultivate relationships with members of the press and pitch stories in service of advancing the university’s strategic priorities for brand recognition and differentiation among key audiences
Lead the tracking and analysis of media coverage and the sharing of coverage among internal audiences; manage vendor relationships for media tools
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and five years of experience in media relations or public relations
Preferred Qualifications:
Seven or more years of experience in media relations and/or public relations, including experience in higher education and as a media spokesperson
