We seek a team-oriented, collaborative colleague to help develop and implement the overarching vision for of WashUâ™s flagship publication, the award-winning Washington Magazine.
This Senior Associate Editor position reports to the magazine editor (Executive Director & Senior Editor position).
The Senior Associate Editor serves as the deputy managing editor of the magazine, which promotes the research, teaching and thought leadership of the university through innovative and compelling stories and visuals.
A key position in University Marketing & Communications, the Senior Associate Editor works closely with the Executive Director & Senior Editor, as well as a team of photographers, video producers, designers and writers, to produce annually three print magazines and six digital editions (with accompanying, content-rich email messages). In partnership, the team works to raise the profile of the magazine and, most important, Washington University.
This position is located in an office environment with some on- and off-campus research and meetings.Â Occasional travel for press checks or meetings.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
In collaboration, the Senior Associate Editor shapes the content and quality of Washington Magazine (both print and digital editions) and ensures the magazine tells the universityâ™s brand story in an engaging and informative way. Directly contributes to creating each issueâ™s table of contents, including creatively and proactively researching and developing ideas. Three times a year, presents story ideas, along with the Executive Director & Senior Editor, to the magazineâ™s editorial board, composed of members of university senior leadership.
Takes part in regular team meetings and contributes to brainstorming on strategy and planning. Also frequently contributes to the feature well. Works with other University Marketing & Communications team members to develop 360-degree strategies to storytelling and multimedia packaging.
The Senior Associate Editor is specifically responsible for managing key sections of the magazine. Namely, the front-of-book and back-of-book departments for both print and digital editions (for a total of nine editions per year):
Develops and researches story ideas.
Conducts interviews of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and outside individuals and organizations for story development.
Writes content for magazine departments, such as campus news, bookshelf, alumni profiles, etc.
Commissions articles from freelance and in-house writers.
Negotiates payments with freelance writers.
Creates and distributes contracts to writers, which include word count, deadline, fee, and background and editorial direction.
Edits and re-writes articles, as needed (also handles cases in which articles must be rejected or returned to the writer for major revisions).
Obtains story approvals from subjects (including VIPs).
Discusses photo and video needs with designers and multimedia team, and works with them on implementation.
Attends photo and video shoots, as needed.
Works with designers on specific sections to create a look and feel that reflects editorial intent.
Assists other staff to meet their deadlines, specifically by tracking tasks in the officeâ™s project management system.
Proofreads entire publication before going to press.
Using WordPress, creates story pages for each department for the digital magazine, including inputting display type, body copy and photos.
Using WordPress, creates magazine email messages.
Works with social media on developing magazine stories for Instagram after each print issue is printed.
Creates comp copy list for distributing print magazines after theyâ™re printed.
Networks with others at industry events.
Understands and complies with media law and industry ethical guidelines.
Performs any other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Executive Director & Senior Editor and the senior leadership team of University Marketing & Communications.

Bachelorâ™s degree in marketing, communications, or related degree and five years related experience or equivalent education/experience to equal nine years.
$53,900.00 - $92,200.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
