NJ Advance Media is looking for an editor to join its expanding News Innovation, Topics and Features team. This position, which is based in our Woodbridge office, will be an integral part of our digital-first newsroom. This team draws from across our newsroom and includes some of our strongest writers and reporters, covering everything from business to popular culture, sports to health to health care, immigration to food. The editor will supervise seven to 10 reporters and help them conceive and execute original and innovative content for NJ.com and its attendant print properties, including The Star-Ledger and the South Jersey Times.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties listed are intended as examples only and may not represent a complete list. Duties and Responsibilities, work schedules, and/or location may change based on evolving business needs.
We want an editor who thinks far outside the box, and who is capable of zagging when others zig; someone who isn't merely interested in reporting the news (that part should be a given), but who wants to set the cultural and intellectual agenda for the state of New Jersey.
We want someone with a strong point of view and a healthy sense of humor? someone whose passion for great journalism is matched only by a passion for innovation.
The ideal candidate is comfortable editing everything from a hard-hitting investigative piece to an offbeat listicle, and is conversant in a broad range of topics, from traditional news subjects to more light-hearted fare.
We also want someone who is eager to approach stories from new directions and use a full range of digital tools to broaden our audience.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
A degree in journalism, English or communications, or a related field.
A minimum of 10 years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.
A love of social media and an ability to use it to expand the reach of stories and grow online audience.
An ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately.
A solid understanding of news writing, journalism ethics and story structure.
A deep knowledge of and passion for New Jersey — or the ability to learn fast.
Other duties as assigned.
To be considered for the position, please include a copy of your resume and a cover letter.
Internal Number: 19-271
