The Office of Communications serves as the primary information resource for the School. We can help journalists with their print, web, TV, and radio stories by identifying experts for interviews on a wide range of public health topics. We create content for the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health website and other Harvard publications. Our office also writes press releases announcing the latest research and news coming out of the School.

The Senior Digital Content Manager is a member of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Office of Communications and serves as the Office's point person for digital content management and strategy, with the primary objective of enhancing and furthering the School's mission and digital brand. This role contributes to the strategic planning and creation of digital content; helps coordinate management and updating of web content on primary websites and microsites; consults with departments, divisions, and centers to assist in creating, rethinking, and maintaining their website content; and ensures that all content on the Harvard Chan School website is accurate, up to date, appropriate, and consistent with School standards.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Help manage the day-to-day web content activities for the Office of Communications; prioritize work and troubleshoot issues, including developing new material by gathering relevant content from departments, organizing and repurposing existing content, and, when necessary, assisting departments in creating new content for the site
  • Ensure that content on the Harvard Chan School website is accurate, up to date, and appropriate and that it adheres to School and University standards and to School style; proofread and edit text for consistency across the site; ensure that the site follows best practices
  • In coordination with the Directors of Creative and Digital Strategy, develop and manage a content strategy to extend the School's online brand across all digital channels and all current and future websites, focusing on audience needs, content value, information architecture, and usability throughout the online creation process
  • Collaborate with the IT department to train members of the School community in using the content management system (WordPress); create and maintain training documents and support documentation; organize group and individual training sessions for internal users working on various web sections; and provide advice and support to other content creators at the School
  • Provide website content and design strategies; analyze site traffic, organize usability testing, and filter test results for recommended improvements to the School's website; collaborate with the IT team on improving the School's website
  • Help implement integrated marketing strategies (online and traditional) for driving new visitors to the site and other digital media channels
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and industry best practices and actively seek ways for the School's web presence to be more effective by suggesting new features, integrating new tools, and researching changes in web technologies
  • Conduct nontechnical website fixes and improvements
  • Assist with the Office of Communications' other communications and media efforts, as needed
  • Support and coordinate with offices around the School on event website creation and promotion
  • Contribute to high priority digital projects for the Dean's office as requested
  • Support creation and distribution of weekly and monthly newsletters, as needed
  • Provide general administrative support for members of the Office of Communications and other duties, as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required as a condition of continued employment once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • 5+ years of related experience, including in news, marketing, and/or web writing, editing, or publishing, required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in online content strategy and creation required
  • Experience translating and reformatting complex content for a wide audience required

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, English, journalism, or a closely related field preferred
  • Experience with content related to public health, life sciences, or social sciences, and in an academic or higher education environment, preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing, editing, and proofreading strongly preferred
  • Experience using website content management systems, including WordPress, preferred
  • Experience with multiple forms of marketing analytics, including social media, Google website analytics, and creating digital marketing reports preferred
  • Experience with SEO and writing for the web preferred
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, and Audition, preferred
  • Experience with graphic design and print production, as well as with social media management and email marketing, a plus
Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills; strong interpersonal skills, including capacity to respond to constructive feedback; commitment to customer service and positive relationships; experience working effectively on a team to coordinate and work with others to accomplish assigned tasks; experience working under time pressures, simultaneously manage multiple projects with competing priorities, and meet specific deadlines preferred
