The Connecticut Mirror (CT Mirror) is a local journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals.
We have an immediate opening for an Audience Specialist who will use a variety of strategies to understand, grow, and engage our audience. The role is part analyst, part strategist, part doer, and part coach. There are five key areas of responsibility:
Working with the executive leadership and business and membership teams, the audience strategist assists with overall goal-setting for the organization, including the internal and external KPIs for traffic, loyalty, and membership.
Assists the managing editor in creating an editorial plan to achieve internal and external KPIs.
Responsible for evaluating and reporting internal editorial KPIs.
Writes a traffic report each week for the newsroom. It covers KPI progress, highlights newsroom wins, and advertises opportunities to leverage SEO, social media, newsletters, and other distribution points.
Leads a weekly traffic meeting with news and business staff to report progress, or lack thereof, and to discuss strategic adjustments.
Responsible for goal-setting for SEO.
Works with the managing editor to determine an SEO growth plan.
Manages SEO workflow for the newsroom, including training, documentation, and newsroom cheerleading.
Responsible for writing or checking SEO headlines, URL’s, meta-tags, and excerpts.
Compile and share SEO metrics and keyword research in weekly staff review.
Responsible for goal-setting.
Works with the Multi-Platform Content Director a social media growth plan.
Manages Social workflow for the newsroom, including training and coaching.
Responsible for creating original social content (words and graphics, customized by platform) / checking social content created by news staff.
Responsible for posting social content on a timely basis.
Compile and share social metrics as part of weekly review with staff.
Collaborates with Membership Manager on Newsletter strategy and execution.
Produces newsletters (layout and graphics).
Distributes newsletters based on segmentation strategy (MailChimp).
Monitors site to maintain optimal story placement and maximum audience engagement.
Preferred, but not required: Marketing / Graphic Design (create house ads, pre- and post-event promotional materials, and graphics for use in news stories and in original and automated newsletters).
The successful candidate will have:
A passion for enterprise journalism that covers policy, government and politics;
Three to five years of experience in audience engagement, analytics, and / or social media roles;
Fluency with one or more online analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics Parse.ly, Metrics for News);
Understanding of and experience on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter;
Ability to draw conclusions from data and share those conclusions in writing and verbally to help newsroom colleagues understand how to attract and retain audiences more effectively;
Strong planning and organizational skills;
The ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with other CT Mirror staff;
A willingness to learn and an aptitude for the skills that s/he does not yet possess;
An instinct for innovating around ways to use digital tools to deepen engagement with audiences;
A hunger for working in a fast-paced environment;
The confidence to ask for advice when needed;
Graphic design skills and experience with Google Data Studio, advanced Excel, and / or Tableau are a plus, but not required.
