Position Summary
The
College of Information and Communications at the
University of South Carolina (UofSC) invites applications for a full-time Lecturer/Instructor in Data, Media, and Society with a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. A suitable candidate must be able to teach courses online and in-person in programming, database, data analytics, and digital communications courses to undergraduate and graduate students. We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
Job Responsibilities
The candidate is expected to teach four courses per semester at undergraduate and/or graduate level. The classes are related to programming, database, and data analytics, and digital communications, such as Fundamentals of Data and Digital Communications and Information Visualization. The successful candidate will be able to work with students and faculty from the School of Information Science (iSchool) and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC).
In addition to instruction, a successful candidate is expected to demonstrate continued professional growth in the field. Successful candidates will be an integral part of programs and instruction for data, media, and society. They should feel comfortable teaching undergraduate (BS in Information Science) and graduate students (MS in Data & Communication). Candidates may be tasked with teaching and/or developing courses related to some of the following topics: web and mobile application development, programming languages (e.g., R, JavaScript, and Python), database management systems (e.g., MS Access and SQL), and data/text mining. Preference will be given to candidates who have such skills but can apply them to mass communications, as these fields overlap and the primary teaching areas will fall at the intersection of information and communications.
The start date for the position is August 2022. This is an annual 9-month appointment that may be renewed for two additional years, contingent upon satisfactory job performance and program needs. There will also be opportunities for additional summer teaching. The position is ideal for a candidate interested in a career in academia with teaching as a major focus. Advertised Minimum Qualifications :
- Ability to teach both undergraduate- and Masters-level courses.
- The successful candidate must have the minimum of an earned Master's Degree in information science/systems, informatics, data science, business, computer science, or communication, or a related field, along with a commitment to excellence in teaching both face-to-face and online.
