Position Summary
Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Strategic Communications & Marketing, the Communications Manager will support the School of Nursing???s Office of Strategic Communications & Marketing by managing communications efforts with an emphasis on public relations. The individual in this role will collaborate with multiple constituencies, including faculty, staff, students, and the press to increase brand visibility and promote school initiatives.
The position involves a focus on storytelling and media relations, developing media strategies, identifying and pitching the School???s nursing research, clinical practice, and academic programs to trade and consumer press, as well as the opportunity to secure and plan thought-leadership opportunities and opinion pieces that position the school and nursing at the forefront of health care.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include:
Media relations support:
Assisting in the development of media plans around institutional announcements, research findings, programs, awareness events, to promote the School and its faculty practice, ColumbiaDoctors Nurse Practitioner Group (NPG).
Identifying compelling stories to pitch and place in the media; developing pitches and query letters, media alerts, press releases and to share across our communications channels.
Developing/maintaining media relationships; maintaining media lists.
Managing and responding quickly to incoming inquiries from the news media.
Facilitating press interviews and coordinating onsite interviews and events.
Meeting with and maintaining relationships with faculty and staff to identify positive story ideas and opportunities to elevate awareness of the School on local, national and international levels and on social media channels; Collaborating with colleagues across CUIMC to share and leverage coverage and to act on media opportunities.
Assisting in conducting media training for key faculty including coordinating the sessions and developing messaging documents.
Media monitoring and monitoring of social media channels for any media-related issues and opportunities; also developing monthly media roundup, and news stories for the monthly newsletter.
Tracking and development of metrics/media results reports.
Writing news items for the school???s newsletters, faculty and student profiles, interviews, press releases, recruitment materials for the School???s communications channels.
Leveraging news by creating media relations content on the School???s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.), internal communications, newsletters, website.
Overseeing the news section of the School???s website using content management systems (Drupal, Wordpress).
Additional Communications Responsibilities:
Contributing to quarterly internal staff newsletter, including content creation and planning.
Taking photos at School events and to support news coverage for posting to social media and communications vehicles.
Assisting in the production of video and photoshoots.
Assisting with marketing events and other activities.
Performing other duties and projects as needed and assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor???s degree in English, Communications, Public Relations or other related area, plus a minimum of four (4) years of related experience.
Solid understanding of healthcare media relations, be detail-oriented, highly organized, digitally savvy, and creative with the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Excellent communication skills ??? both oral & written ??? are a must for the individual in this role.
Exhibit proactive customer service and be results-oriented with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Prior experience in communications is essential for the individual in this role.
Preferred Qualifications
Work experience in healthcare media relations and communications is preferred for this position.
Experience with media relations, social media, media relations software (CISION), and website content management systems (Salesforce, Drupal) is also a plus.
