Department Information
The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine is committed to understanding the symptoms and neurobiological basis of mental illness and advancing psychiatric treatments through extensive involvement in basic and clinical research and patient care. The department is also involved with educating and training future leaders of psychiatry and behavioral science.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Develops and implements an external departmental communications strategy to enhance public awareness and promote the mission of the department of psychiatry. This will include, but may not be limited to, the following:
Manages the departmental website keeping content accurate, relevant, and fresh. Works with various faculty and staff to develop content as needed.
Works with providers and team at iuhealth.org/providerinfo to keep all provider bios up to date on both the IUSM and IUHP website.
Works with IUH web team to keep behavioral health content accurate, relevant, and fresh on the IUH website.
Manages departmental external media presence including social media platforms and identifying stories that can be pitched to be picked up by local media outlets.
Acts as the primary point of contact for all requests from external media sources, community groups, etc. for information about the department and/or interviews or expert opinions from our faculty.
Acts as project manager for development of departmental annual report.
Ensures departmental alignment with IUSM branding and communications strategy by coordinating with the Dean's Office of Strategic Communications.
Maintains knowledge of University and IUSM visual standards and campus communications guidelines and will ensure compliance in departmental communications.
Develops and implements an internal departmental communications strategy to enhance team member engagement. This will include, but may not be limited to, the following:
Produces a departmental newsletter.
Identifies and pitches stories to various internal outlets such as IUSM InScope and IUH The Daily.
Participates with some of our internal committees such as DEI and Wellness and brings communications expertise in how to get messages out to the broader team.
May be asked to draft and send certain departmental communications.
May be asked to assist with development of other internal communications products such as handouts, protocols, presentations, how-to's, etc.
General Responsibilities
Independently creates basic communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
