Position Overview:
The Digital Content Producer elevates the Carleton brand through the creation of short-form video content and high-quality, engaging photos. This full-time, exempt position uses creativity, visual storytelling expertise, and a deep understanding of the College’s brand and voice to generate excitement about Carleton, support the College’s recruitment goals, and advance the College’s strategic priorities.
The Digital Content Producer is a savvy marketer and social media pro whose primary focus is visual media. They serve many roles on video projects and at different stages of the production process. They must be capable of filming solo or in a small team, and editing videos from start to finish or picking up an edit in-progress. As such, they must be creative and organized. Collaboration and relationship management with a diverse community are also strengths for this role, as the Digital Content Producer works with students, staff, faculty, and alumni from all parts of the College on creative projects.
A member of the Division of Communications team, the Digital Content Producer reports to the Visual Storyteller and works closely with the News & Social Media Manager, among other communications staff. This position also assists the Visual Storyteller and the Vice President for Communications in developing and carrying out an annual strategy for video and photography at Carleton that aligns with College goals and priorities.
The Digital Content Producer should be: creative and curious, a consistent contributor of new ideas, comfortable working in various locations around campus, and skilled at collaborating with people at all levels of an organization. This role occasionally requires work to be completed on evenings and weekends.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Short-Form Video and Social Media Content Creation
Produce engaging short-form video content (including vertical video on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts) that aligns with the College’s brand and messaging.
Collaborate with the News & Social Media Manager to develop visual content strategies for social media.
Follow trends in content creation, photography, and social media, and experiment with and learn from new tools and technologies in visual storytelling.
Photography and Asset Management
Capture and edit professional-quality photographs for use across various social media platforms, as well as in printed publications and marketing materials.
Manage Carleton’s digital asset management system, in collaboration with other primary users.
Video Editing
Edit video b-roll and interview footage to create engaging videos for various platforms (including horizontal video for Carleton’s website, Emails, YouTube, and Facebook).
Ingest and prepare video clips, transcribe audio recordings, organize b-roll footage, edit audio, apply color corrections, and export videos for various delivery methods.
Photo and Video Coordination
Work in close collaboration with the Visual Storyteller in planning, scheduling, and coordinating photo and video shoots, including securing locations, identifying and coordinating with subjects, and conducting pre-interviews.
Provide on-site video and photo shoot support, including lifting and setting up heavy equipment, lighting and miking talent, among other tasks.
Recruit and oversee student talent for participation in video and photo content.
Manage a team of student photographers and videographers, providing training, supervision, mentorship, and regular feedback to these student employees in support of their professional development.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
The Digital Content Producer hires, manages, and evaluates student workers. This position is a member of the Division of Communications team and reports to the Visual Storyteller.
Education/Experience/Skills:
Required:
A bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional experience in digital content creation, with a strong focus on photography and short-form video production.
Demonstrated expertise of videography and photography through coursework, internships, or professional experience.
Experience producing video for social media, including in a vertical format for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
Experience setting up video and photo shoots, including lighting, sound, and equipment.
Exceptional judgment and attention to detail, with outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
Deadline-driven, highly organized, and able to work independently while handling multiple tasks.
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
