Overview

Crosscut is seeking a reporter to develop, write and produce original stories focused on Native communities in the Pacific Northwest. This role is central to a new editorial initiative at Crosscut intended to provide improved news coverage of Native communities and to amplify Native voices. The reporter will produce enterprise journalism from our Native communities that drives awareness, conversation and change. 

Salary Range: $60,000-$65,000 annually

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

I. Report

  1. Develop, write and produce original stories focused on the region’s Indigenous communities 
  2. Pitch, research and deliver stories, via traditional and emerging mediums
  3. Ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and of high integrity

II. Audience Impact

  1. Collaborate with Crosscut’s visual journalists, podcast producers and editors in the newsroom to create stories that are timely, compelling and incorporate a range of media
  2. Use insights (relationships, community impact and metrics) to inform story choices and shape beat strategies
  3. Plan and closely interface with internal Audience Engagement team to amplify and engage with Crosscut’s growing digital audiences ahead of scheduled stories and projects
  4. Oversee a dedicated beat while working closely with an editor to manage an editorial calendar of upcoming stories and broader related projects

III. Represent

  1. Serve as a Cascade Public Media representative at community and partner events
  2. Collaborate and present partnership opportunities across regional Indigenous communities
  3. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in broadcasting, journalism, communications, new media, business, or a related field or equivalent experience required
  2. At least two years of experience as a reporter in a deadline-oriented environment; indigenous affairs-related environment a strong plus
  3. Strong command of AP grammar and style
  4. Passionate and keenly versed in regional tribal affairs
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external relationships, as well as the ability to mentor less experienced employees
  7. Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment
  8. Deep understanding of journalism ethics and practices, with nonprofit or public media experience preferred
  9. Must live in WA State with the ability to work remotely and make occasional trips to the Seattle office

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  2. Ability to work a varied schedule, including evening, weekends and some holidays required
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
